Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites, due to their good comprehensive properties such as short molding cycle, high impact resistance, moisture and heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and environmentally friendly reusability, are more suitable for the high requirements of modern industrial mass production. In recent years, it has become a research hotspot for fiber composites, including high-performance thermoplastic composites such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyetherimide (PEI) and polyphenylene sulfone (PPSU). In particular, thermoplastic composites with thermoplastic PEEK as the matrix have better solvent resistance, friction resistance, fatigue resistance and unique biocompatibility, etc., which makes continuous fiber reinforced PEEK composites can be widely used in aerospace, automobile, medical equipment and other fields.
The development and research of high-performance continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites abroad began in the 1990s, and has gradually shifted from material research to application research today. Due to the technical blockade for some reasons, the research on continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites in China is too slow. As for the thermosetting composites that entered China earlier, with the development of the fiber composites industry and the progress of science and technology, the requirements for materials are getting higher and higher, and the types of applications and markets are constantly expanding.
Traditional thermosetting composites have been widely used. Today, with the rapid development of science and technology, thermosetting composites can no longer meet the needs of the market, and a class of excellent fiber composites is urgently needed to replace them. However, thermosetting composites have accumulated a certain amount of experience and have derived a series of composite materials of different systems in response to demand. The entire process from prepreg supply to application market is quite mature. For the new thermoplastic composites, there is no ready-made technical reserve to use from production equipment to manufacturing process, and everything has to be explored from scratch. Moreover, because the production technology and manufacturing process requirements of thermoplastic composites are relatively high, general thermosetting composite companies are not yet capable of or dare not rashly get involved.
Our company is dedicated to the development of high-performance thermoplastic composite materials. The company has successfully developed a variety of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials, mainly with carbon fiber, glass fiber and aramid fiber as reinforcement, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyetherimide (PEI) and polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) as the matrix, to prepare high-performance continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials to meet the market demand for materials. Among them, continuous carbon fiber reinforced CF/PEEK thermoplastic composite materials are the main development and research direction. The production technology is mature, which can achieve fast, efficient and high-quality molding, meet customer requirements in all aspects, and have been well received by customers.
At the same time, the company is also very concerned about the trademark rights of thermoplastic composite materials, and applied for and approved the PEEKFRTP ® trademark, which greatly improved customers’ awareness of thermoplastic composite materials. Although there are many obstacles, the market’s objective demand for thermoplastic composites has prompted the company to look to the future and actively carry out the development and application of thermoplastic composites. We have carried out special research and development on thermoplastic fibers, and based on the application of high-performance special materials such as PEEK and PPS, we have bravely taken steps towards high-performance thermoplastic fiber composite materials.
Although the advantages of thermoplastic fiber composite materials are very obvious, the raw materials of thermoplastic fiber composite materials are relatively expensive, which will increase the cost of the product to a certain extent, and the increase in cost may affect the market competitiveness of thermoplastic composite materials to a certain extent; at the same time, customers do not understand this new type of composite material as thoroughly as traditional metal materials, the composite material is updated at a fast speed, and there are many types of composite materials composed of different matrices and reinforcements, which makes customers still lack sufficient confidence to try rashly. In response to customers’ lack of understanding of thermoplastic composite materials, it is necessary to rely on the harmony and joint efforts of both supply and demand sides. As a manufacturer of thermoplastic fiber composite materials, the company can efficiently complete production and manufacturing through advanced automated molding, significantly reducing the use cost of individual components, and can also reduce the overall structural cost of application targets, contributing to the reduction of operating costs.
